This is the tenth year that BMF Wessex has run a "Go Boating" event in Poole. This year Poole Afloat will be held on Poole Quay and in the Poole Quay Boat Haven on Saturday 20th June 2009. The format will be the same as in 2008 and be for one day only alongside "Harry Paye" Day. Due to lack of sponsorship we are unfortunately unable to use the services of Liz Lean PR this year. We thank them immensely for all the work they have done over the last four years.
We really would like as many members as possible to get involved in the event. Stand space on the quay is free of charge for BMF members and £50 per space for non members.
We would also like as many members as possible to bring boats along on the day for "Try a Boat". There will be some help towards costs for this.
For further information or to reserve a stand space please contact Celia Sharpe on 01202 431088 or James Sydenham on 01202 707391.
This is our own local event - Please get involved to make the day really successful.
The summer quarterly meeting will be held on Tuesday 16th June at Mezza Luna in Poole Park. The evening will be a change from the normal dinners. We will be holding a networking evening and a buffet. If you know any non members who would be interested in coming along please get in touch with Peter Gordon on 01202 677272, There will be an opportunity to get out on the water later in the evening. Rockley Watersports will be arranging pedalo and rowing races on Poole Park Lake. There are changing facilities available if required. Please let me know if you would like to join in the fun (alternatively you can watch the action from the balcony of Mezza Luna). Prizes will be awarded on the night.
Phil Austen-Smith will be talking about his forthcoming expedition. Munro's Mariners 2009 is a charity fund raising kayak expedition up the Gironde and Garonne rivers to Bordeaux, loosely retracing the route taken by Operation Frankton during the Second World War, popularized by the 1954 film "Cockleshell Heroes". The expedition consists of 10 paddlers the majority of whom are serving Dorset Police officer's using their own leave allocation in order to paddle the 70 miles from the Bay of Biscay to Bordeaux retracing the endeavours of officers of the Royal Marine Boom Patrol Detachment, the Cockleshell heroes. The team will set off from the UK on Friday 27 November to travel to France - with the expedition officially getting underway on Saturday 28 November. The team are due to finish on Tuesday 1 December
The expedition is in memory of Police Inspector 770 Neil Munro of the Dorset Police who tragically died on March 13th 2008 and to honour the heroic efforts of the marines who successfully undertook the original expedition in 1942.
The paddlers in the expedition are enthusiastic amateurs. The aim of the expedition is to raise monies that will be divided equally between three charities
The BMF Wessex Spring quarterly meeting and dinner was held on Wednesday 1st April 2009 at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Portland, Dorset. John Tweed, Chief Executive of the Academy gave a presentation on "Looking Towards 2012 - Development of the Sailing Academy" and Simon Williams of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council spoke about "Going for Gold" and how Weymouth and Portland will be a destination for marine excellence. It was a beautiful, sunny evening, a delicious meal and a very successful meeting.
In anticipation of a really good summer (after the last two very poor ones) it has been suggested that we get together out on the water. We hope to be out and about for the Air Festival (20-23 August) and a lot more occasions too. If you would like to meet up please email and I will let you know what is happening. wessex@britishmarine.co.uk
British summertime officially began on Sunday 29th March and to celebrate Rockley Watersports held an open day at Poole Park. Local residents relished the chance try dinghy sailing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and other watersports for FREE and the day saw over 400 people take to the water!
Poole Park became a hive of activity with local people turning out in droves to try the watersports on offer, those on dry land had plenty of fun too having a go on the climbing wall, bouncy castle and even the merry-go-round.
The 2CR FM Thunder crew came down to the event and gave out 241 refreshment vouchers for Mezza Luna kiosk which over looks the lake.
Since Rockley @ Poole Park opened in 2007 it has provided more than 10,000 activity sessions to Dorset-based school children, with many schools making it part of their weekly physical education activities.
Also, thanks to the availability of taster sessions and boat hire for sailing, windsurfing and canoeing it has welcomed many adults and families too.
Rockley Watersports managing director, Peter Gordon said of the day: "We are absolutely delighted that so many people came down to the park and tried out the watersports on offer. We are passionate about trying to get more people on the water, so to have over 400 people give it a go has been an absolute delight."
Rockley @ Poole Park is open from March to October for all, with the opportunity to try short courses in sailing, windsurfing or short hire of kayaks, pedalo, windsurf, sailing or rowing boat equipment.
