1,000 DAYS TO THE OLYMPICS
1,000 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT DORSET

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council would like you to think of all the amazing things you know about Dorset Ð and share with them what they are to help mark 1,000 days to go until the start of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 1000 day countdown began on Saturday 31st October 2009, and they are going to be telling the world just what makes our county of Dorset so special. This period will see a remarkable build up of celebrations, marking Dorset's involvement as the host county of the sailing events for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, which are being held in Weymouth and Portland.

This will involve gathering at least 1,000 interesting facts about Dorset, one of which will be displayed on the Team Dorset website and other leading sites each day until the start of the Games in July 2012. The information will be used to inspire and generate national and international media coverage, further raising the profile of the county; and promoted in media centres for major events in the lead up to and during the Games.

The facts we would like to be included have been arranged in five different categories and should be kept fairly short:

  • Heritage and Culture
  • Food
  • Sport
  • People
  • Business

To submit your Ôfascinating facts about Dorset', simply click onto www.teamdorset.org.uk and follow the links from the top page menu. A printed copy of the form can be picked up from the main reception of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council. ROCKLEY WATERSPORTS WELCOMES OMAN SAILING TEAM

Sailing specialist, Rockley Watersports, became home to the Oman sailing team for six weeks. Based in the Middle East, Oman Sail is a government initiative created in 2008 in a bid to ignite Oman's strong maritime heritage and inspire a new generation of young Omanis to take part in sailing as a recreational and competitive sport. Oman Sail's dream is to make sailing accessible to schools and young enthusiasts and develop the infrastructure required to create a sustainable future for sailing in Oman. In order to achieve their goal they needed to begin training the first groups of Omani sailors who were carefully chosen through a tough selection process. One of the Omani squad who trained in the UK during 2008 became the first Arab to sail around the world non-stop!

"Since we have been at Rockley Watersports we have been hugely impressed by the flexibility of the staff and their accommodating approach to delivering RYA training. The Omanis are currently fasting during sunrise and sunset for Ramadan; Rockley has even taken this in to account and re-structured the training days to make fasting and sailing possible which has been a great help. We wanted to ensure that we gave the team the absolute best and we have definitely achieved this thanks to Rockley Watersports." Peter Gordon, managing director of Rockley Watersports commented: "We were delighted when Oman Sail chose to come to Rockley Watersports, they have been an absolute pleasure to teach. We are looking forward to following their progress and hope to continue to support the initiative in the future." For more details on Oman Sail visit www.omansail.com or for more details on Rockley's International training scheme visit www.rockleywatersports.com or call 01202 677272.

MIKE PERHAM Ð THE SAILS BEHIND A REMARKABLE VOYAGE

Mike Perham entered the record books on 27th August as the youngest person to sail single handed around the world. He and his 50 foot yacht Totally Money had survived storm force winds and mountainous seas, a knock down in the Southern Ocean and numerous technical challenges including autopilot failure and damaged rudder bearings. Mike's voyage would not have been possible without sponsorship. BMF members KEMP SAILS had faith in him and provided him with a full suit of sails. A nine month global circumnavigation is equivalent to about 15 years use on a typical cruising yacht so it's a tough test of everything on board. Kemp Sails worked closely with Mike to produce the comprehensive sail wardrobe. "We're delighted to have helped Mike successfully complete his remarkable voyage" said Rob Kemp.
