Poole Afloat is only a few weeks away. The organisation is going well and the event will be bigger and better than before. We have managed to secure a road closure for the weekend between Poole Quay Boat Haven and the Thistle Hotel. Some stands will be located there and also in Harbourside Park. The event will run from 10-5 on both Saturday and Sunday. The booking office will be at Harbourside Park in a mobile home loaned by Rockley Park. Volunteers are needed to help man (or woman!) the event. Please give me a call if you can spare a few hours – Celia Sharpe 01202 431088. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible over the weekend. Please support our event and help make it a huge success. A leaflet promoting the event is enclosed with this newsletter. More copies are available if required from Liz Lean PR.
Race Day will be held on Tuesday 4th July at Roadford Lake in Devon. The Plymouth centre is the latest addition to a network of Marine Skills Centres across the South West, with others based in Poole and Falmouth and was formed through a partnership created between local marine businesses and the public sector. Plymouth 's second facility focussing on marine fit-out and engineering will open later this summer.
Workers from local marine businesses can now receive ‘cutting edge' training in all aspects of GRP and laminating technology using new equipment at Plymouth 's brand new Marine Composites Training School , based at Princess Yachts International's Coypool manufacturing site.
Mike Leece, Chairman of Marine South West, Chief Executive of the National Marine Aquarium, Chairman Designate of Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and former Chief Executive of DML formally opened the facility on 11 th May assisted by Princess' Apprentice of the Year 2005, Shaun Austin. This will be followed by a tour of the facilities.
Anyone wishing to learn more about the Marine Skills Centre may call Adam Corney, Executive Director, Marine South West: 01752 666733.
It has now been over a year since the Marine Skills Centre was officially opened by Juliet Williams, chair of the South West Regional Development Agency on the 22 nd of March 2005 .
The Centre, which is located in the old Hamworthy Engineering apprentice training centre has been transformed from an under used storage facility into a fully functional training establishment committed to supporting the marine industry's needs throughout the South West.
Over the year there have been some significant milestones which can only serve to benefit the centre and more importantly, benefit those using it.
The first of these milestones was the award of the American Boat and Yachting Council (ABYC) licence to Paragon and ITE training Group for the Marine Electrical Technician qualification. This programme was brought about by demand from Sunseeker International to have their electricians trained to the ABYC Standards due to their large export of boats to the USA . Now Paragon and ITE Training Group are one of only two companies outside the USA entitled to run such courses with the Marine Skills Centre being the preferred establishment. Other companies that have so far benefited from this course are Nauticool, Poole Marine Services and Princess Yachts.
Sarah Ayton, Ingling Sailing gold medallist and windsurfing World Championship Nick Dempsey gave up some time out from their busy schedules to formally launch the marine Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) for Marine Engineering and Technology in August 2005. They were delighted to offer their encouragement to the young engineers and skilled craftsmen that the CoVE programme strives to produce.
Many other companies and individuals have benefited from the Centre and the facilities on offer. They range from Basic RYA shore based courses to more in-depth MCA approved courses, all of which are delivered by local training providers. The Centre also hosts a variety of bespoke courses including Introduction to Marine Electrics, Introduction to Hydraulics and Abrasive wheel courses to mention a few. A comprehensive list of all the courses and training providers can be found on our website www.marineskills.co.uk.
In addition to hosting a vast range of training activities the Marine Skills Centre can be used as a business centre. There is a sixty seat conference facility and two meeting rooms that will accommodate up to twenty delegates each, all with the latest digital presentation equipment, not to mention a fully functional workshop facility too. They can also arrange refreshments and lunches upon request and there are plenty of car parking spaces available on site.
For the future they are hosting two initiatives within the centre both starting in June 2006. Business Link Dorset (and Hampshire) have launched a Start-Up programme to support the local marine industry.
Starting in June 2006, the pilot will give people help and assistance to start their own businesses, with a special focus on the marine sector.
The second is a series of Safety Awareness workshops aimed at the marine industry with the first workshop planned to take place on the 15th June. It will consist of four modules over a day.
The cost for taking part in all four modules will be £100.00 per person.
These modules will change for consecutive workshops and we will endeavour to cover most safety modules that employees will expect to be familiar with in the workplace.
For further information on either of these initiatives or to arrange a visit please contact Steve Potter the Centre Manager or any of our staff on 01202 606520. You can also visit www.marineskills.co.uk.
