In order for a company to achieve growth and development training must be placed at the forefront of its agenda giving both management and staff the opportunity to develop their current skills and to introduce new skills by way of further training.
The Marine Skills Centre has been established to support the local marine industry with their training needs. The objective is to contribute towards the reduction in the skills gap by offering a variety of facilities and by bringing together trainees and training providers through one location to help increase the business competitiveness of the marine sector in the South West.
The continuing rise in the cost of insurance has driven many small companies out of business and many more to operate at serious risk without public or employers liability insurance as a result. Companies have a duty under the law to ensure that they take steps to protect their staff under the health and safety regulations and to also ensure that adequate training is given where appropriate. There is a good chance that insurance companies will respond favourably to employers engaging in training to comply with the legislation and in responsible business practices (see Boating Business newsletter issue April 2007). The Marine Skills Centre hosts a variety of training courses aimed specifically at the marine industry ranging from First Aid to IOSH accredited courses to IT training courses amongst the many featuring on the prospectus.
With companies vastly differing in their training requirements we strive to accommodate their needs by identifying the right training and finding the right provision and facilities to suit those needs at a cost that is acceptable.
If you would like to discuss your training needs or just to have an info rmal chat please call Steve Potter on 01202 606522. You can also visit our website at http://www.marineskills.co.uk/poole and browse the facilities and courses on offer at the Marine Skills Centre.
BMF Wessex AGM will be held in the Autumn. Andy Osman will then have completed his 2 years as chairman and our vice chairman Peter Gordon will be taking the chair. Nominations are invited to join the committee at this time.
The first step towards bringing watersports back to Poole Park has begun with the construction of a new pontoon! The pontoon marks the start of Rockley Watersports’ venture to make watersports accessible to everyone.
Rockley Watersports, has invested over £100k into the project, which will provide watersports to the general public and schools at Poole Park ’s 60-acre lake.
Managing director, Peter Gordon said: “The pontoon is the first stage of the ‘Rockley at Poole Park ’ project. “Over 70 dinghies, kayaks and pedalo boats have been ordered for the new centre and the completion of the boathouse will take place shortly. The first groups have already visited.
“It is a very exciting project, not only for Rockley Watersports but for schools and those who want to experience watersports for the first time. Rockley at Poole Park will give everyone the opportunity to get on the water and it offers an ideal environment for beginners!”
Rockley at Poole Park offers a range of activities including short courses and taster sessions in sailing, windsurfing and kayaking as well as pedalo and rowboats for hire. www.rockleywatersports.com
Sailing and outdoor activity specialist, Rockley Adventure will once again host an initiative, which aims to improve education and create opportunities for young people from across the UK . HSBC Global Education Trust has organised for over 70 students from more than 25 schools to learn to sail at Rockley Point in Poole . The Trust was established in 2001 with the aim of providing children with the opportunity to raise their academic achievement and improve their vocational skills with formal and informal learning. Rockley Adventure is working closely with the Trust to give the children the opportunity to learn a new skill. Dame Mary Richardson, Chief Executive, HSBC Global Education Trust said: “We are committed to offering young people inspirational experiences outside the classroom.
Peter Gordon, managing director of Rockley Adventure said: “The students will visit our UK centre in Poole over two weekends and during that time will experience a number of activities as part of the ‘Rockley Adventure’. Students will work towards gaining a Royal Yachting Association stage 2 sailing certificate. This is quite an achievement considering most of the students have no sailing experience. The weekend will not only give students the chance to learn a new sport but it also encourages children to work together as a team and builds confidence”. As a signatory of the ‘Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto’ it is important for Rockley Adventure to host events like the HSBC Global Education Trust’s sailing academies. For over 30 years Rockley Adventure has been championing the benefits of outside learning and welcomes thousands of schools every year to experience a number of watersports disciplines across dedicated centres in the UK and France . The H SBC Global Education Trust backs this belief and gives children the chance to learn through inspirational and exciting experiences outside the classroom environment. Rockley Adventure’s qualified staff will work hard to give the students a learning experience that they will not forget!”
Rockley Adventure is hosting the 4-day residential sailing weekends for the HSBC Global Education Trust on 18 May and 22 June. Students will learn how to sail a Laser Pico, including basic boat controls and tacking and safety on the water. Other activities are also planned for the group including fun races, a visit to a water flume park, climbing and beach games.

Apart from the challenges of the race itself, higher points made this one crucial to the overall RORC Offshore Series. Poole Yacht Club's Peter Kent will show slides and video and tell the tale from the rail....
