Poole's biggest-ever free boating and watersports event was hosted by BMF Wessex in June. Poole Afloat proved a huge success with thousands of people attending throughout the weekend to enjoy a spectacular showcase of boats and watersports accessories, 'Try A Boat' sessions, and a variety of entertainment at Harbourside Park and Poole Quay.

During the two and a half day event, more than 560 people took to the water with boating professionals for free trips around Poole Harbour in a variety of craft such as motor cruisers, sailing yachts, dinghies, and RIBS, to learn about watercraft and watersports. There was also the opportunity to take a stroll around a Second World War gunboat and luxury motor yachts provided by Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline.
Crowds had the opportunity to watch regular water demonstrations from the exhibition site at Harbourside Park provided by the K-Class National Youth Powerboat team, Poole Amateur Rowing Club, and Thundercat racers Michael Hatting, number two Thundercat racing world champion, and Damion Bowen, 2004 National champion. The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter also delighted visitors with a fly-by.
Aside from boating demonstrations, families also enjoyed a schedule of free family entertainment including live music from the Jolly Roger band, street entertainers 'Del Boy and Uncle Albert', face painting, and a guest appearance from two CiTV Splash Camp stars. Funding was kindly provided by the South Western Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), Poole Tourism and Crest Nicholson.
There will be a course entitled "Presenting yourself Overseas" held in Poole on 1st March 2006. Further details again from Kerry Morgan.

Marine South West's 4th conference for Marine Sector businesses promises to float your boat at the Riviera Centre in Torquay afloat on Wednesday 5th October. This free one day event is your opportunity to have a say about what matters to you in the marine industry and how you think we can improve it.
Delivering a practical solution for the South West Marine sector's business needs is the number one priority for MSW. The New Horizons conference is the industry's opportunity to tell us what is working, what needs to be looked at and explore opportunities and barriers to growth. With your input, we will produce a Marine Industry Action Plan, which will drive MSW's next three year business plan, 2007-2010.
Eight successful Marine projects will present a case study during the morning workshops, focussing on Marine Enterprise Excellence, including local partnership working, technology transfer, process improvement and marketing. During the afternoon Local Action workshops, delegates will work in groups based on their business location and focus on the outcomes of the morning workshops. We hope that everyone will contribute to the debate, using their own experiences to discuss hurdles or issues faced and solutions found.
The conference timetable will follow this outline:The conclusions reached in the morning and afternoon workshops will form the action list which we plan to publish at the end of the conference. This will form Marine South West's business plan and set objectives to address in the next three year business plan.
Guest speakers will include Lord Sainsbury of Turville, the DTI minister for Science and Innovation and Arctic Explorer, Pen Hadow.
We hope that you will be able to attend the Marine South West New Horizons conference and contribute to the continued success of the Marine Sector in the region. If you have not already done so, please complete the registration form available on the downloads section of our website: www.marine-south-west.com and return to Marine South West by 19th September.
